History of L.G. Henley Co., Inc:

In the spring of 1938, Laurie Gerald Henley opened his first floor covering store in the Wollaston part of Quincy on Beale Street across from the Wollaston Methodist Church.
It was an immediate success. L.G. Henley Co. soon outgrew that location and in 1941 moved across the old Old Colony Railroad (now MBTA) tracks to 5 Brook Street where it remained for 67 years.
Tucked between McFarland’s Hardware store and Dee Dee’s lounge it became another fixture in the quiet neighborhood of Brook Street.
In 1958 William Abbott came on board as an apprentice. As all employees had done before, Bill worked his way up through the ranks to part time salesman, installing by day and selling nights and weekends. This arrangement continued for a number of years until he was selling more the installing floors. By the time 1977 rolled around, Jerry was ready to retire to Naples, Florida where he lives to this day and Bill Abbott bought the company. Bill’s son David came into the business in 1972 the same way Bill did, but his first tasks were that of sweeping floors and empting trash barrels. When he was old enough the carry tools and be an apprentice, David was sent into the field to learn the ins and outs of flooring. After college, David came on board full time as an installer, perfecting his craft in linoleum, carpet and ceramic tile installations.
Bill was ready to retire in 1995 and head to Florida with Jerry Henley and David assumed the ownership of the L.G. Henley Company becoming the 3rd owner in its 70 year history.
Fast forward to 2008 and the L. G. Henley Co had outgrown the Brook Street address and the neighborhood outgrew the company. It became more and more difficult to conduct business in such a fast changing area.
On March 24, 2008 and with deep sorrow and great anticipation the company was moved to a more customer and worker friendly location of 20 Branch Street, Quincy.
After 70 years in business and as the oldest Quincy based flooring store, the L.G. Henley Company continues to be a Quincy based company, and expects to thrive at their new location.
